Since its creation two hundred years ago the Sheriffs' And Recorder's Fund has focused on helping ex-prisoners get a new start in life and on relieving hardship in the families of serving offenders.
It now helps to reduce re-offending by making grants for training, tools of trade, clothing and household equipment. It also gives to families of serving prisoners, primarily to allow their children to enjoy holidays and other recreation.
The fund depends on the continuing generosity of individuals and institutions in the City of London.

- 52% of men in prison and 71% of women left school with no qualifications.
- 67% were unemployed before their sentences.
- 66% of male prisoners and 55% of women have had a drug or alcohol addiction or habit.
- 59% have dependent children and a third of women are single parents.
- 75% of ex-offenders have no job to go to on release.
- 30% own only what they stand up in on release.
